Gambling Movies

You might not be able to think of many gambling movies off the top of your head, and that’s okay, but gambling has often been a major plot device used in major motion pictures. In fact, some of the most memorable (and unmemorable) movies in cinematic history contain gambling as a core aspect of their storytelling devices. Whilst the list of every movie to feature gambling is exhaustive and we will cover the Top 100 Gambling Movies of All Time (as rated by IMDB) later on on this page, but for now we’ve cut down a list to contain 5 classic gambling movies – each totally different from the other – which we would heartily recommend to you.

Croupier

This 1998 film may not be as famous as other titles in our list, but it certainly did help launch the career of Clive Owen. Croupier tells the story of Jack Manfred. Whilst working as a croupier, he learns to use what he sees as an inspiration for his own book. It isn’t as explosive as Die Hard, or as enchanting as Harry Potter, but for proper gamblers, Croupier is inspiring at the very least.

Ocean’s Eleven

Ocean’s 11 is one of two big blockbusters on our list. George Clooney stars as Danny Ocean in this, the first of the Ocean’s films, who has just got out of prison and would like to take down the owner of a casino who had him banged up. The group he assembles is formidable, and if you’ve ever thought of taking down a casino in a single evening (try three in this film), Ocean’s 11 is for you. You never know, you may even get a taste for the Ocean’s series.

21

By now, you’ll be familiar with the real story of the group of MIT students who count cards for years in casinos across the country. Well, this movie showcases their story and stars Jim Sturgess, and Kevin Spacey. The film leaves you on tenterhooks when the casinos realise what they are up to you, so this is well worth a look.

007: Casino Royale

Baccarat is Bond, and 2006’s Casino Royale showcases that wonderfully. In Daniel Craig’s first outdating as the British spy, he dukes it out with a black-market weapons dealer, is a terrific baccarat scene like only 007 can do. Of course, there’s plenty more action and drama in this film that gambling, though, as well as standout performances from Eva Green, Judy Dench returning as M, and Mads Mikkelsen as the villain, Le Chiffre.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

The whole plot of Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is about how a group of four lads try to cheat a gangster by counting cards, only for him to cheat them back. They then spend the entire movie trying desperately to come up with £500,000 before he kills them. It’s Guy Ritchie at his best, is loaded with gags, and teaches every viewer one thing – don’t gamble with gangsters. Arguably one of the best British comedies of all time, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels features a clever cast (Jason Statham, Sting and Vinnie Jones to name but a few) and is a hoot from start to finish.

Other movies to watch

If you fancy watching other major gambling movies, might we recommend 2014’s The Gambler, 1965’s The Cincinnati Kid, Richard Dreyfus’ 1989 hit, The Let It Ride, and 2012’s Killing Them Softly?
