Tomb Raider II, or Secret of the Sword, as it’s also named, is a Microgaming slot machine and a sequel, being the second title that they’ve released with this particular theme. The inspiration for this game came from the popular Tomb Raider video games, which have been present on the market since the 90s. Among the features mentioned in the game, you can expect wild symbols, scatters, a Super Mode, bonus games and a free spins mode with Rolling Reels and up to 5x multipliers.

There are 30 bet lines on 5 reels in this game, and with bets of up to $300 you can expect payouts as high as $75,000 in the base game, or $375,000 while in free spins mode. The slots unofficial RTP is at about 95%, so it’s not going to offer you the best shot at making a good profit out of it.

Theme & Design

If you’ve played video games in the past, especially in the late 90s or early 00s, you’re probably aware of the Tomb Raider franchise. This video game series gained quite a bit of support thanks to its hero, a pretty young woman in skimpy outfits, armed to the teeth and doing the sort of stuff that Indiana Jones was known for in the movies of that period. You will see Lara Croft in quite a few of the symbols which are used in this game, usually holding a handgun or two, climbing or jumping around.

Though you get about five different Lara Croft symbols, there are also just as many playing card symbols in the game, and they’re the basic kind, white letters with a bit of color for their borders. The overall impression is not an impressive one, and you should expect more of a tribute to the early Tomb Raider games than a title based on the latest games released.

The soundtrack of Tomb Raider II is made up of a mix of classic slot sounds and background music which is much more appropriate for this kind of adventure theme.

Betting Options & Prizes

The game lets you change the number of paylines that are active (Lines option), how many coins each one gets (Coins option) and the coin denomination (first from the left, with a gold coin for the background). You can use a maximum of 30 lines, with up to 10 coins in each case, and with denominations ranging from $0.01 to $10. The maximum bet is at $300 and in exchange you can take home up to $75,000 from a single combo.

Prizes go up to 7,500x the line bet while in base game, with a five wild combo forming up on a payline. The value would be up to $75,000. If you get the win during the free spins, and as part of the Rolling Reels feature, it could be worth as much as $375,000.

Features Explained

The only symbol to show you a close-up of Lara’s face is also the one that acts as the wild feature. Capable of taking the place of other symbols, it will still only work with regular ones, not with scatters or bonus triggers. Get the wild Lara to form its own combo of five symbols, and you get paid 7,500x the line bet.

The Free Spins get triggered by the scatter symbol, its image being of some sort of artifact made out of metal and with a green color to it. Get up to five such symbols to appear, even if they’re not on a payline, and you get your reward, up to 100x the bet value and free spins with Rolling Reels. The Rolling Reels will take out the symbols which are part of winning combos, replacing them with new ones and trying to get you new prizes. With each new wave of wins offered as part of the same paid spin, you get a higher multiplier, the maximum being 5x.

One other feature which includes free spins is the one they call Super Mode. You can’t trigger it yourself though, being randomly activated. 5 free games are awarded at this point, with locked wilds being placed on the reels, staying there until the feature is over.

The bonus symbol has the Passport image on it. It is used to activate the reels of the slot, and the bonus game triggers once all five are activated. A reel is activated by a bonus symbol which appears in the center position. The activation of all these reels will typically occur over multiple spins.

Once they’re all active, you begin your search for the fragments of the Hidden Sword. You pick the location and you search there, the feature ending if you find two booby traps. If you find the Hidden Treasure, you can get a prize worth up to 70x the average bet, 2x multipliers or entrance into a Shootout feature.

If you get access to the Shootout bonus, you will be shown fifteen gold disks which hide prize values. You pick one of the disks and you receive the prize hidden underneath.

What Makes It Special

The thing I appreciated most about it was the mix of features that is offered, especially the Rolling Reels found during the free spins, which will increase the prize potential significantly. Another aspect of significance is the ability to increase one’s wager at anytime, regardless of how many bonus symbols have landed. In theory, one can increase the rtp of this game slightly by making small wager spins, until four passport bonus symbols have appeared and then increase your wager afterwards. Since the value of the bonus game is dependent on the size of one’s wager just prior to activating the bonus, then you should be able to drastically increase the potential payout while hopefully only having to make a low(ish) number of high bet spins.
